 Что такое AMSAT? AMSAT (Amateur Satellite Corporation) является международной любительской организацией, объединяющей в своих рядах радиолюбителей, интересующихся проведением связей друг с другом через аппаратуру, установленную на искусственном спутнике Земли. Как официальная организация AMSAT существует с 1969 года и была зарегистрирована как некоммерческая организация в District of Columbia (США).

Основная цель AMSAT – создавать возможность радиолюбителям участвовать в космических исследованиях и космической радиосвязи. По образцу этой организации во многих странах мира созданы свои организации любителей спутниковой связи. Большинство из них также содержит в своем названии слово AMSAT.

Наиболее известными среди радиолюбителей являются AMSAT–NA (Северная Америка), AMSAT – DE (Германия) и AMSAT – UK (Великобритания).Многие из этих организаций тесно сотрудничают друг с другом, помогая разрабатывать, строить, отлаживать аппаратуру любительских космических аппаратов, помогая друг другу в запуске и управлении спутниками. Для реализации наиболее сложных проектов формируются из добровольцев международные команды.

Спутники, разработка, изготовление и вывод на орбиту которых проходит под эгидой организации AMSAT стали получать наименования, начинающиеся со слов AMSAT-OSCAR и очередного номера (см. таблицу параметров действующих радиолюбительских спутников). Например, AMSAT-OSCAR 40 (АО-40). Начиная с того периода организацией AMSAT было введено понятие Фаза (Phase).

К Phase 1 относятся спутники, находящиеся на очень низких приполярных круговых орбитах. К таким спутникам относились Sputnik I, OSCAR’ы I, II, III, спутники Iskra 1, 2, RS-21 (Kolibri-2000) и другие.

К Phase 2 относятся спутники на более высоких приполярных круговых орбитах, такие как OSCAR’ы 6, 7, 8, UoSAT Oscar’ы 9, 11, советские спутники типа RS. Сюда относится также большая группа спутников, известных под названием MICROSAT. Это очень маленькие по размерам спутники, в которых размещена аппаратуры цифровых ретрансляторов, разработанная в университете Surrey (Великобритания).

К Phase 3 относятся спутники, находящиеся на эллиптической орбите.
